Join the Kazakh eagle hunters of Mongolia's remote Altai mountains as they train and prepare their magnificent eagles for the October hunt.
National Geographic magazines expert guide Canat, will take you on an overland expedition in the remote Altai mountain region bordering Kazakhstan and western Mongolia.
After arriving in Ulanbatur, the capital of Mongolia, you fly for 1000 kilometers to the far western province of Olgi to the town of Bayan Olgi. Here you will stay in Canat's guest house and have a good nights sleep and excellent hot food before setting off on your expedition.
The following day you will travel in a Russian 4 x 4 expedition jeep, off road, across the dramatic Mongolian wastes high into the Altai range where you will stay in an traditional Ger with your eagle hunting hosts.
You will be catered for in traditional Kazakh style, you will learn to hold and fly the huge golden eagles, to ride the Mongolian horses and make fantastic walks with the hunters as they go in search of their highest prize-the elusive red fox.
As to the spirit of your hospitality;
Here is a quote from our eagle hunting host on our art making expedition in 2002-
"When you travel to live with me and my family in my ger from far across the world- if you do this and stay for more than one day, and we drink vodka together and eat fresh lamb together- then we are brothers..."
