A 7 day bespoke walking Safari in the footsteps of the most legendary big game hunter and conservationist of them all, Frederick Courtney Selous, into some of the most remote, pristine and game-rich areas of East Africa in the company of one of East Africas top safari guide Festo.
Travel back in time to the golden age of safaris away from the crowded mini buses and bustling lodges of the major tourist reserves.
You will be flown from Dar es Salam in coastal Tanzania to the largest and one of the least visited games reserves in Africa, the Selous.
Your guide Festo will meet you in your own 4 by 4 safari vehicle at the air strip and you will be whisked away to the beautiful Sandrivers lodge on the banks of the Rufugi river to unwind and relax for your first day and night before begining your 5 day walking safari.
In the company of Festo each day you will walk through virgin bush without seeing another vehicle or person, (your safari car will always be on hand if you should like to rest your feet for a while) camp under well made fly tents by moonlight under the stars and the watchful eye of your guide and tune into the raw nature of the African bush. You will dine open air next to the fire with superb Mumm champagne. Enjoy hot showers suspended from doulm palm branches and wake each day to a fresh new magnificent panorama.
During the course of your safari you will receive training in bush craft, tracking and you will learn about the flora and fauna from your experienced tracker.
You will end your safari at Sandrivers lodge created by legendary safari guide Richard Bonham.
A note about our walking safaris;
Your daily walking safari usually begins at 7.00 am and normally ends at about 11.00 am when the sun begins to get very hot. You will break for a lovely lunch and an afternoon rest before commencing the evening walk- which begins at at 4.30 pm. during this time our support team will leapfrog ahead of you to erect your evening camp.
Arriving at your evening camp at dusk with the pace being slower than the morning walk you will be greeted by a selection of your favourite ice cold drinks for the only compulsory event of the day- the sundowner!
Wildlife that you can expect to see on your journey include Wild Dog, Lion, Leopard (not always), Elephant, Giraffe, Buffalo, Eland, Zebra, Impala, Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Hippo, Crocodile, Hartebeest, Hyena, Jackal, and Bush buck.
In addition to this safari we offer a similar format of expedition in Tanzania's remote Katavi reserve. if you would like to spend and extended period in tanzania we can also arrange for your walking safari to continue in this beautiful and diverse location.
Flying from Arusha you will begin and end your journey in this the remotest pristine habitat in Tanzania at the beautiful Chada camp and spend two nights at Nomad's famous Mahale camp where you will have the opportunity to track wild chimpanzees.
