Svalbard polar bear tracking
07th Jun 2007

In April 2007 we returned from an exciting, rugged expedition on the Norwegian high Arctic Island of Spitzbergen in the Svalbard archipeligo. We covered over 450 miles on skidoo in search of polar bears, winter camping and braving catabatic storms and freezing conditions.

Our objective was to paint polar bears and conduct a recce of the island for forthcoming OSE trips. We were guided by our friend polar guide Inge and accompanied by two great friends John Simpson and John Ferriera and Bjorn Aune -who proved to be a valuable asset and competant guide!

I am please to say , despite some unusual weather (global warming is seriously affecting sea ice stability on Svalbard)the expediton was a huge success despite the tough conditons.

and we managed to spend time on the ice pack with a mother bear and her cub-

which was something we had not experienced before. It was an amazing adventure- and i have to say strenghtens our resolve to spend time each year outside of our comfort zone!
We are planning to run expeditons in both Canada and Svalbard and in both summer and winter and will be departing in August for a summer tracking trip from an expediton vessel and using local trapper cabins and tentage-making work for our forthcoming polar bear show in NYC.
